It is often said that a woman's true age is revealed by her neck.

When it comes to taking care of their skin and applying wrinkle treatments, most people to focus on their face while neglecting their neck. However, the skin around the neck is more sensitive and thinner compared to the face.  This makes it more susceptible to the effects of gravity, premature aging and the development of a crepey appearance.

Understanding the basic causes of neck wrinkleswill enable you to make effective choices in preventing and treating them.

Again, the overall thinness is what makes the neck skin look older than the face, especially when wrinkle treatments or proper preventative measures are not applied.  Nonetheless the causes of neck wrinkles are not much different from facial wrinkles.

1. Excessive Sun Exposure

UV rays from the sun cause collagen and elastin to break down. These are protein fibers that keep the skin firm and elastic. Wrinkles and sun damage require protection through the regular use of sunscreen. Although lasers and other cosmetic procedure options are available to tighten the skin and correct existing damage, it is still important to be mindful of basic protection against excessive sun exposure instead of depending on wrinkle treatment procedures down the line.

2. Lifestyle Habits

Lifestyle habits, including a poor diet, smoking and excessive coffee drinking basically facilitate the aging process throughout the body.  In this area, prevention outweighs the effect of any wrinkle treatment. A diet low in fruits and vegetables will contribute to the buildup of free radicals that cause the wear and tear of tissues and cells. Nicotine and caffeine constrict blood vessels, making it difficult for the skin to receive proper levels of oxygen and nutrients

3. Muscles and movement

Just as overactive facial muscles cause creases in the skin, muscles & movement also contribute to the development of neck wrinkles and saggy skin.  More aggressive forms of wrinkle treatments are needed. Platsymal muscles in the neck change over time. Their shape and structure becomes more like cords when you clench your teeth.  As a result, they are able to give less support to the skin around the neck. This is how turkey gobbler necks develop.

Neck wrinkles can be treated with Botox can be used as a wrinkle treatment to address sagging skin and vertical striations caused by platysmal muscles. The injection works to relax these muscles so they can continue to provide a flat even surface to support the skin around the neck.

In some people, fat is likely to accumulate in the neck area. So when they move their head horizontal lines develop and become more etched in the skin over time. At the moment there is no standard cosmetic method for correcting these lines. However, wrinkle treatment fillers like Juvederm or Restylane can sometimes be used to improve the appearance of the creases.

Studies do show that UV rays play a significant role in the development of premature aging skin across the board.

If your skin has been exposed to years and years of sun exposure, Laser wrinkletreatments  can be used to not only correct photo damage but also pigmentation issues as well on the face, neck and other parts of the body.  Be sure to get help from a board certified dermatologist who can give you proper recommendations for treating and preventing neck wrinkles.
