Mason jars are traditionally used to can fruits and vegetables, but can also be used to create a wide array of crafts projects. Using the jar as a base, these whimsical projects can be used to decorate for a holiday, or given to a family member or friend as a gift. - A basic glass mason jar can be used to create a whimsical snow globe to display during the holiday months. To make a snow globe from a mason jar, pour enough water into the jar to fill it three-quarters full. Add in 1 tsp. of clear glitter. Hot glue a plastic figure to the underside of the jar's lid, such as a Christmas tree or a snowman. Allow the glue to cool completely. Squeeze a line of hot glue around the inside edge of the lid, then screw the lid onto the jar tightly. The hot glue will cool and will seal the lid onto the jar. Turn the jar upside down to enjoy the snow globe.
- Unwanted mason jars can be given a new life by turning them into scented container candles that can be given as holiday gifts. Simply melt beeswax in a double boiler, then add 1 tbsp. of fragrance or essential oil to the melted wax. Hold a cotton wick upright inside the mason jar so that 1 inch of the wick sticks out of the top. Pour the melted wax into the jar, filling it within 1/2 inch of the rim. Hold the wick in place until the wax cools completely, which can take about 30 minutes.
- Children can transform mason jars into coin banks by altering the jars slightly. Paint or decorate the outside of the jar using acrylic paint, glitter glue, craft glue, glitter and sequins. Allow the decorations to dry completely. Poke a 2-inch slit into the top of the mason jar lid using a hammer and a nail. Screw the lid onto the jar, and insert your coins.
