Garage Sale - Keep or Trash

    • The cheapest way to clean out a home garage is by sorting through the items in the space and having a garage sale with the stuff you no longer want. To start your home garage cleaning project, start pulling items from the front of the garage and place them in your driveway. Sort through the items and toss any empty boxes, plastic grocery bags, old paint cans and painting accessories and any broken items. Make a stack of items you want to "keep." Once you have the front of the garage pulled out and sorted, start pulling items from the back of the space. Ask your family and friends to help. Make sure your "keep" pile are items you really want to keep and not just items you think you want to keep.

    Deciding Which Items to Sell

    • Sort through the "keep" items and decide which ones you are willing to sell in a garage sale. For the items you really want to keep, place them back in the garage in storage totes, on shelves or in some other organized system. Do not just toss the items back in the space and let down the door. You may want to place the items back in the garage and then think about selling or discarding the items later. The key is to eliminate items you don't use or want. After some thought, you may see that you really don't need or want some of the "keep" items.

    Setting Up the Garage Sale

    • If you clean the garage out on a Friday, have the garage sale that next day. Try to have the sale as soon as possible so you don't have to store the items too long in your garage or other space. Don't make the sale a big production. All you need are some signs, some masking tape to mark a price on the items and some money to make change. Price the items in a low-price range so you can move them quickly. Setup the items in your driveway and on the grass around your driveway. Make sure the weather is good on the day of your garage sale and that you are ready to go when it is time for the sale.

    Give Away or Donate

    • Any items that don't sell at your garage sale can be given away to friends and neighbors or donated to a charity like the Salvation Army or Goodwill. You may want to call the charity you are wanting to use the day before the sale to schedule a pickup of unsold items immediately after the garage sale. You can also box up the unsold items and take them to a charity or other donation service.
