Rift and Rememberance
There is a new obsession in the online gaming world and it goes by the name of Rift.
I must admit that I am constantly amazed at Rift and the Planes of Telara and the overwhelming popularity of this dazzling other worldly experience that is brought to us by Trion.
Rift takes its place beside the equally exciting World of Warcraft.
To paraphrase an old automobile commercial, "This is not your father's video game".
Not to give away my age here, but I must admit that I remember very well the first video game that ever came out.
I may have been 12 or 13 years old when a friend and I walked into a well known department store(okay, it was Kmart) and heard a funny beeping sound coming from behind us near the front entrance.
There were people, mostly other kids actually, gathered around the source of this mysterious sound and they seemed excited about what was going on.
There were shouts and pats on backs and a general murmuring of approval coming from this small crowd.
And behind it all was that enticing electronic sound.
..
donk...
donk...
donk..
I know, it's hard to duplicate that sound with words, but donk is about as close as I can come to it.
Any way, our curiosity got the better of us so we walked over to see what all the commotion was about.
We ducked under and around people as we made our way toward the sound and then, there it was, a pale, glowing, green screen divided by a line and with a small green dot moving back and forth across it and bouncing off of smaller lines that were being controlled by two kids who were working small knobs just below the screen.
When the dot hit one of the small lines...
donk...
it would go back across to be intercepted by the other little line and...
donk.
And Pong was born.
We, and everyone we knew, was hooked.
There were a lot of kids waiting to play the game that day so I'm not sure if we got to play then, but soon, we were pumping dimes into one just like it and we played it so much that we heard that sound in our sleep.
Soon there were more and better games and before we knew it there were whole rooms, full of beeping and blinking games, called video arcades.
And these became the gathering places for a whole generation.
I am sure that the grown-ups thought that this was just another passing fad but how wrong they were! Now, we fast forward back to today, and the 'passing fad' is still going strong but nobody has to go to the mall or a shopping center to get their daily fix.
Now we sit in front of a computer screen and choose between Mage, Warrior, Cleric, and Rogue as we prepare to play the game of Rift and we don't even see the people we are playing with or against.
In fact, they may be half way around the world and helping us to choose the Paladin, The Riftstalker, or the Stormcaller as our Souls to perhaps save the fantasy world of Telara.
From Pong to Rift and the Planes of Telara it has been a great ride and it only seems to get better as the games get more and more sophisticated.
We actually seem to step into another world when we play the game of Rift.
I am so into this game that I give tips and advice on playing it at Rift Leveling Fast.
Just imagine what games the future holds and what worlds we will visit as we move deeper into the 21st century and beyond.
