Bringing up children with the best habits, behavior and moral is one of the most demanding responsibilities placed on parents.
Every parent wants the best for their child and also tries to imbibe the best values in them.
The intention is pure and good, however, the method opted might not be.
Given below are a few mistakes which are most often made by parents while trying to get their children listen to them and imbibe good values.
1.
Lecturing rather than discussing - children appreciate and listen when their parents discuss with them, rather than lecturing.
Children like to be treated as adults when they grow up and do not like to be told each and every thing.
Discussing about any topic will help them come out with their thoughts and also give a little thought to what is being said.
2.
Under reacting - many parents would put aside certain behavioral changes and habits of children as "growing up phase".
Identifying any change or pattern which may cause harm to the child helps in avoiding any emergencies which may arise thereof.
3.
Rule and regulations - parents find it easy to set rules and regulations.
It is a common misconception that punishments, rules and regulations can help the child learn the difference between good and bad.
This is not true.
Understanding the actual situation and presenting the pros and cons of the child's decision can help him/her identify the good and the bad.
4.
Unreasonable goals - every parent has to set reasonable goals for their children.
Yelling, setting expectations beyond the attainable limit is not going to benefit the child.
Identifying the child's potential and setting reasonable goals will not only motivate the child to achieve but also increase his/her confidence in self.
5.
Pointing out mistakes and expecting positive changes - many parents point out the negative points in a child, in an attempt to get the child bring out positive changes.
This does not happen.
The child will lose confidence in self and will not be willing to work towards bringing out the positives.
6.
Educating children - do not expect the children to learn about everything in school.
Parents need to take an initiative to educate children about the various dangers which may be around them, such as drugs, bad company, negative behavior etc.
Children of parents who talk to them about such high-risk behaviors are likely to refrain from getting into bad habits and bad company.
These were a list of mistakes made by parents and also how it can be tackled.
Parenting is not an easy job.
It requires time, patience and a clear mind to help children grow up to be better citizens of the community.
