Every so often a television show comes along that captures the hearts of just about everyone. It doesn't matter your age, sex or race, because you can find something you love no matter what. These are the shows that the whole family can watch together and get something out of, whether you relate to the characters and plot lines, or you just enjoy the opportunity to escape from your real life for a little while. With the recent trend towards reality television and other alternative types of programming, these shows have unfortunately been few and far between.

Recently though, the FOX network scored a hit of this kind with Glee, a laugh out loud, yet touching show about a high school glee club. When the show was first being promoted to audiences, long before it aired, many were quick to write it off as a High School Musical knock off. This would come at no surprise, considering the success of the teen franchise and the built in audience that it already has. Based on previews and early buzz, Glee seemed ripe to pick up right where High School Musical left on, and capitalize on the easily influence teeny bopper generation. Television studios know just how important it is to woo this audience, so Glee seemed like the perfect vehicle to do this with.

The reality though is that Glee has turned out to be a different kind of show altogether. While the extremely talented members of the high school Glee club sing contemporary hits that younger audiences immediately recognize and sing along too, they also perform classics that keep the older generation glued to their HD televisions. The show also has genuinely smart, witty humor that is rarely seen on television anymore. Most popular shows today that have a comedic component tend to dumb down their audiences and use cheap humor to get laughs. The comedic powerhouse of the maniacal high school cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (played by the incredible Jane Lynch) is truly what makes the show so genius, not to mention the eccentricities of Rachel (played Broadway star Lea Michele), the self-appointed star of the glee club.

Aside from the great music and the fantastic humor on Glee, there is also a human element that makes it so touching. Many of the show's episode's deal with the issues that real kids face in high school, like pregnancy and discrimination. The cast is incredibly diverse and this is also an issue that is not shied away from. Just about everyone can find a character on Glee that they can relate to, and this is a big part of why so many fans will be flocking to their high definition televisions tonight, eager to see the new episode of Glee after the winter hiatus. There is sure to be even more music, laughs and even tears in this next half of the season, and if you have been missing out on all the fun, now is the time to tune in. If you have trouble keeping up with Glee because of your busy schedule, you should also consider investing in satellite tv. You can record your favorite shows and watch them whenever it is convenient to you. Plus, you can watch your favorite Glee episodes as many times as you want!
