In "Escape the Museum," Susan, an archaeologist at the National Museum of History, is taking her daughter, Caitlin, on a tour when an earthquake strikes the city. Mother and daughter become separated, and Susan must search the museum for Caitlin and try to preserve some of the museum's irreplaceable artifacts. As Susan, you must navigate the ruined museum and solve puzzles to make your escape. - The National Museum has close to 40 rooms that you must investigate. Each room contains at least one puzzle, and some rooms feature as many as four challenges. For most rooms, only one puzzle is available at a time; you must progress through other rooms in the game to unlock new challenges in rooms you've already visited. If you exit the game before completing a puzzle, you will lose your progress in that challenge and have to start it over during your next session.
- Some rooms in the museum are filled with debris, and you must find and use items in the room to progress. Question-mark icons will appear over items you need, and when you click them, the objects will appear in your inventory at the top of the screen. By clicking an hourglass icon on the screen, you'll get a close-up view of a specific location where you can find additional items or use objects you've collected. Inventory items can be combined or used by clicking them. Often, items must be used in a particular sequence to solve the puzzle. Once your way is clear, an icon of a man surrounded in a green circle will appear; if the circle is red, there are additional steps to solving the room.
- In some rooms, your colleague, the museum curator, will call your phone and ask you to collect 12 different hidden objects. When you revisit these rooms later for unlocked challenges, you'll need to collect 10 of one particular item. The "Hint" button will reveal the location of an item, and a clue will appear on your phone. You can use as many hints as you like, but each hint and incorrect click will negatively affect your accuracy percentage for the puzzle.
The hidden-object puzzles in "Escape the Museum" are more difficult than in most games of this genre. Objects are well-blended into the background, and in some cases, they're partially obscured by other items in the room. The game is not very forgiving of misplaced clicks; to pick up found items, you must place the mouse pointer precisely on the object.
