How to Embrace Weeding
- 1). Plan some short- and long-term gardening goals. A short-term goal is to weed the garden for 20 minutes, twice weekly; a long-term goal could be to maintain a weed-free garden for one month.
- 2). Study the edible and medicinal features of weeds, such as dandelions and lamb's quarters, because weeding is an opportunity to practice plant identification and to add novel and nutritious greens to your everyday meals. In this way, weeding can feel more like harvesting.
- 3). Ask your children or significant other to weed with you, as it can be an occasion to share quality time with others--or you can use it as an opportunity for thought and self reflection.
- 4). Wear gloves and use an assortment of gardening tools, such as a hoe, trowel and weeding (asparagus) knife. Appropriate tools reduce the frustration of pulling prickly and deeply-rooted plants.
- 5). Focus on one small area at a time, such as the patch beneath your rose bushes, if the sight of your entire property is overwhelming to you.
- 6). Reward yourself for each goal you achieve, and save the larger rewards for achievement of your long-term goals. The rewards can be items for your garden, such as new trees, or something enjoyable for yourself, such as a trip to the masseuse.
