What to Consider When Visiting South East Asia

101 13
South East Asia is one of the most popular regions in the world for tourists, rightly so, with a myriad of cultures to experience, food to sample and destinations to visit.  Before visiting the area, one should consider the agenda for the trip.  For the more adventurous, a trip to South East Asia would not be complete without a trip to the stunning temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, or Bagan in Myanmar.  Beach bums head to the South of Thailand in their millions to experience some of the best beaches on the planet.  Phang Nha, Krabi, Trang and Satun for example feature stunning coastlines, and world class scuba diving.  The gulf of Thailand is also popular for beach fans as well as adrenaline junkies with resorts offering a range of activities such as rock climbing, cliff jumping, scuba diving and wakeboarding.  For nature lovers there are ample opportunities throughout the region to experience the diverse and beautiful flora and fauna, whether it be the more commercial areas such as Chiang Mai, or a more remote destination such as Laos, there is something to cater to all tastes.

Of course for fans of cosmopolitan cities, there is nothing quite like experiencing the nightlife of Bangkok, or checking out the dozens of shopping malls with the latest in designer brands.  For a more laid back city experience, Vientianne in Laos is a much quieter capitol city, with barely any traffic, wide avenues and great places to stay and eat.  With Myanmar opening up to tourists, Yangon is starting to develop quickly and despite a shortage of accommodation it is a worthwhile experience in this unique country.

Visitors who desire some Western and reminders of home often head to more developed regions, which include Phuket and Koh Samui.  These islands have world class accommodation, healthcare and infrastructure for peace of mind, and with direct flights to many international destinations, they have long been a favourite of many tourists to the region.  Seam Reap is another growing city which is attracting large numbers of people, Angkor Wat is the obvious reason for visiting Seam Reap as it serves as the jumping off point but other activities include zipline eco-tours within the park grounds.  This unique experience allows visitors to develop a deeper understanding of the eco-system whilst at the same time experiencing the rush of ziplining through the jungle canopy.  ZIplining in Asia can also be enjoyed in Chiang Mai and Chonburi in Thailand.

Once the agenda has been set, additional considerations should be made for visas, jabs, and sorting out flights and currencies.  Visitors in the region are often amazed at the ease of travel, how friendly the people are and how affordable it is, which are just some of the reasons for the popularity.
