Yash Chopra – The Eternal King Of Romance
One man who pioneered the art of telling a love story in Indian Cinema, is legendry Yash Chopra. He is the man who taught us the meaning of love with his films like Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Silsila, Lamhe, Kabhie Kabhie and many more. He is one of the few film makers who started their careers in 1950 and successfully moved from the socially significant Dhool Ka Phool (1959) to young and cool Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997).
Yash Chopra started his career as an assistant director to I.S. Johar and his elder brother B.R. Chopra. He made his directorial debut with Dhool Ke Phool in 1959, a melodrama about illegitimacy. The film was a hit. He made this movie along with his brother B.R Chopra. The brothers after this made few more films together, like Waqt (1965) and Ittefaq (1969). In 1973, Yash Chopra started his own production house Yash Raj Films and the first film of his production was Daag: A Poem Of Love (1973). It was with the films Deewar (1975) and Kabhie Kabhie (1976), that Yash Chopra established himself in the Bollywood. Both these films also play a very important role in Amitabh Bachchan's career. These films established Bachchan as the greatest film star.
In 1989, Yash Chopra directed the beautiful film Chandni. Chandni was a huge success. Another memorable film by Yash Chopra was Darr (1993). He moved to production in 1995 and produced his son Aditya Chopra's directorial debut Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. This movie broke all the records and still it is the longest running film ever in Bollywood. Yash Chopra directed three more romantic films after this, all starring Shah Rukh Khan, Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), Veer Zaara (2004) and Jab Tak Hain Jaan (2012).
On 21 October 2012, Yash Chopra died of illness. Jab Tak Hain Jaan was his last film both as a director and producer. The contribution that Yash Chopra has given in the Indian Film Industry can never be forgotten. He will always be one of the finest film makers we ever have. He won several awards for his films, including six National Awards and Eleven Filmfare Awards. The Govt Of india honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his immortal contribution in Indian Cinema. Yash Chopra was the first Indian to be presented with BAFTA's lifetime membership for his contribution to films.
The journey of this truly magnificent film maker although came to an end but his work and contribution in the Indian Film Industry will be remembered for many years to come. His Yash Raj Films continues to deliver the finest of Indian films and carrying forward the legacy of "King Of Romance", Yash Chopra.
