Three Indian Americans Appointed to The Key Post of Obama Administration

Three Indian Americans have been appointed to the key post of Barack Obama administration, further expanding the list of Indian Americans in his administrative setup:

Nisha Desai Biswal

appointed as the "Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia",the first ever Indian American to be appointed at this post.

By virtue of this post she will be the USA's first point person for South and Central Asia and in charge of shaping nature of engagements of USA with Asia.

She has earlier worked as the assistant administrator for Asia at the US Agency for International Development

several other Indian Americans have been appointed at assistant secretary level eg. Bobby Jindal, Richard Varma, Karan Bhatia and Suresh Kumar but this is the first time an Indian American is heading the South Asia bureau.

Dr. Vivek H. Murthy

Obama administration nominated Indian-American Vivek H Murthy to be the next Surgeon General of the Public Health Service of USA.

when confirmed by the US Senate he will be the youngest and the first-ever Indian-American in American history to assume the post.

he replaces Regina Benjamin, 1st Surgeon General of this administration, for a term of four years (acting Surgeon General was Dr. Boris D. Lushniak).

a doctor at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and an instructor at Harvard Medical School founder and the president of Doctors for America, a group of doctors that actively campaigned for Obama's health care law (Affordable Care Act) that was finally passed in 2010. Earlier as part of Doctors for Obama, he campaigned for the reelection of Obama.

Kal Penn

Indian-American Kal Penn (Kalpen Suresh Modi) has been nominated to US "President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities".

He is an actor, writer and producer in Hollywood (USA Film Industry)

In Obama's first tenure he was an "Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement" from 2009-2011, serving as liaison to Young Americans, the Arts, and Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
