How to Install Front Sway Bar in a Chevelle

    • 1). Raise and support the front of the car on jack stands.

    • 2). Lay the new sway bar out in front of the car with the ends facing the rear of the car. There should be two center clamps that are half shells with a rubber grommet that surrounds the sway bar under the clamp when installed. There should be two bolts for each clamp. Each end of the sway bar has a hole. There will be a corresponding hole in the lower control arm. The sway bar will be connected to the lower control arm with the use of sway bar links. The links consist of a long center bolt and nut with a series of washers and bushings.

    • 3). Position the sway bar under the radiator on the ground with the ends laying on top of the lower control arms. Put the floor jack under the center of the sway bar and raise it to lift the sway bar within 2 inches of the frame. Locate the bolt holes in the frame for the sway bar brackets. There should be a set of holes on either side of the frame that would place the bracket on the sway bar about 6 inches in from the arms.

    • 4). Install the rubber bushings with the flat end toward the frame and directly between the bolt holes in the frame. Install each clamp with the two bolts provided. Make sure the bushing is dead center on the bracket. Loosely tighten the bolts with a socket so that the bar can be moved for final alignment.

    • 5). Install the sway bar links. Install a metal washer, then a rubber bushing on the long bolt with the threads facing down. Insert the bolt with these pieces through the hole in the end of the sway bar arm.

    • 6). Install a rubber bushing and a metal washer followed by a long metal sleeve. Next to the sleeve, install another metal washer followed by a rubber bushing. Lift the sway bar arm with the long bolts with all these parts installed, and insert the bottom-threaded end of the bolt through the hole in the lower control arm. From the bottom side of the lower control arm install a rubber bushing, metal washer followed by the nut. This completes the assembly of the sway bar link. Tighten the nut on the bottom of the link until all the pieces are tight and the rubber bushings are just beginning to compress. Do the same for the other side.

    • 7). Center the sway bar so that both sway bar links are standing straight up. Move the center bushings as necessary for alignment with the clamps and tighten the clamps securely.
