Free Government Grants for Grandparents Raising Grandkids

Now the fact is that even though you didn't give birth to them, you are none the less entitled to all that a normal parent would be, and that includes free government grants. Grants that can help to take much of the burden that has landed in your lap off your shoulders, and make raising your new brood a far more enjoyable experience.

To qualify is quite basic. That is that you must be able to prove that you are valid citizen of the US, have a social security number for both you and the children you are raising and be able to prove that you are a resident of the state that you're applying for the grants in. You also must have the documentation proving you have been awarded full time custody.

Possibly one of the most generous of these free government grants, is the Section 8 Housing Program. Now it won't put cash in your hand but it can provide housing for you at a discount, and that the discount can be substantial. Also another nice aspect of this program, is the apartment and condos that are available in your community tend to be in some of the more upscale complexes.

Even so, be aware that you will in all likely hood be required to go on a waiting list once you qualify, and the wait can take up to a year, and in some cases even more. You're also going to have to be pre-screened to make sure that you have never been through a formal eviction process, or been convicted for selling narcotics.

TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families can provide much faster relief and it also comes in the form of cash, and, or a temporary housing voucher. Now the housing voucher is temporary but it can be renewed and unlike section 8 that has you living in an apartment complex, these types vouchers will usually provide a place to live at a local motel.

Then there is the national grant program known as the CCDF, or the Child Care Development Fund. Now this program is funded by the federal government but is administered locally, so you can find out more about it your local welfare office, or at any community based family outreach programs.

This program by and large issues vouchers for free child care, so it can be of great help if you're working or need help while your going through a job training program. Even so, in most cases unless you qualify for any of their exemptions, the children you have custody of must be younger than thirteen years of age, be disabled, or have special needs.
