How to Care for a Clivia Lily
- 1). Plant Clivia in orchid potting soil, which leaves the roots exposed to the air and is a requirement for this plant's survival.
- 2). Grow Clivia as a potted plant you can take indoors unless your garden is in a frost-free climate year-round. Maintain it at 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing season. Lower the temperature to below 65 degrees Fahrenheit but above freezing and let the soil stay dry between late October and late January. Allow the plant to rest in the cool and dry environment so it makes new blooms when conditions warm up.
- 3). Water Clivia when the soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid a consistently moist environment to prevent root rot.
- 4). Place outdoor Clivia under the shade of a tree. Grow the plant indoors in bright, but indirect, sunlight.
- 5). Feed Clivia an all-purpose soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the formula you select. Suspend application during the plant's cold and dry rest period described in step 2.
