What Happens When We Don"t Exercise?

103 12
Up until our mid 20's our body stays strong without specific exercise.
We are usually naturally active and get plenty of activity just enjoying our youth.
But after the age of 30ish things change and what we used to take for granted suddenly starts to slip away.
We basically have two choices at this point and can either begin the long slow process of losing muscle tissue and our strength or we can take action and start an intentional exercise program to build and maintain our strength.
If we choose not to do this and become one of the six out of ten adults who do not do enough direct muscular exercise you might be saying to yourself at this point "So what, what can possibly happen to me if I don't?" If you lived a hundred or more years ago it would be likely that your daily life would be very active just to get through the tasks and activities without cars, household appliances and technology that we enjoy today.
Our modern lifestyles today have us going from our bed, to our car, to our desk, to our couch and back to bed again without doing anything that even vaguely resembles the 'work' our ancestors did on a daily basis.
We do nothing that even gets us close to breaking a sweat or directly working our muscles for days, weeks or even months.
We have somehow forgotten or maybe we are in denial about the need for the human body to be active - very active - very often.
And the reason for this is that when we challenge our muscles vigorously 'growth and repair' hormones are stimulated which are the chemical messengers that tell every cell, tissue and organ in the human body to be repaired, replaced, or renewed.
As long as these hormones are being released the human body stays strong - without them we decay, deteriorate and die.
This is the old 'use it or lose it' scenario in its most primitive form.
And this is what we see so prevalent in our sedentary and inactive world today.
In fact it is so bad 400 million people are predicted to die from premature and preventable disease in the next decade.
But you are lucky you know about this now and can make an informed choice.
Which way do you want your health span and your life span to go? What you do in the way of proper exercise that includes mostly strength training exercise and whether you are prepared to ditch the processed food in pretty boxes made from dirt cheap ingredients with little to zero nutrition will determine how well you fare in the last third of your life.
This is the time that the pigeons come home to roost so to speak and the results of what you do and don't do in the years and decades before will tell the story.
But regardless of where you are now or what you have done or have not done in the past it is never to late to get started.
You can get active, get yourself strong, make an effort to eat better and start taking some responsibility for your own health and wellness.
At least you will be doing something to ensure you do not end up as one of those unfortunate 400 million people that disease is relentlessly stalking.
What choice will you make?
