Is It The Flu Or Diabetes?

103 94
When we get that feeling that we are coming down with something, most of us, especially men tend to just shrug it off or ignore the feeling and keep plugging along.
We just assume it will pass and we might take some cold medications or some Tylenol, but that's it unless it becomes unbearable and then we might seek medical attention.
There are some symptoms though that should not be ignored.
These are the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes and they could lead to blindness, loss of limbs, coma or even death.
The symptoms can come on rather quickly and sometimes severely and can lead to what is know as diabetic ketoacidosis.
The symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis could include nausea and vomiting and can lead to dehydration.
When this happens the potassium levels in your blood can change dramatically and you could go into a diabetic coma or worse die.
Some other symptoms of diabetes are:
  • Extreme fatigue- not just being tired but a more severe fatigue than what is normal for you.
  • Weight loss - unexplained weight loss due to the body being unable to process the calories we consume and possibly losing sugar and water through urination.
  • Poor wound healing - slow healing and the chance of infections is what leads to ulcers and possibly loss of limbs
  • Extreme thirst - having high blood sugar levels, our bodies try to dilute the blood by making us feel we are thirsty.
With this extra thirst comes frequent urination as our body tries to get rid of excess sugar which can also lead to dehydration.
Managing diabetes can be a challenge, but there are things you can do to live a quality life with diabetes.
Start by seeing your doctor regularly and finding out all you can about diabetes and what you can do.
Check your glucose levels often so you can control when insulin is needed.
Today's technologies have made it fairly simple to measure your levels with easy to use meters.
One of the best things you can do to keep diabetes in balance is watch your diet.
What you eat can greatly affect diabetes along with exercise so getting on the right track here can be a life saver.
Talk to your doctor to find out what would be best for you.
Sometimes it requires a big lifestyle change for some, but with a little will power and patience it will be well worth it to beat diabetes!
