Cold Air Intake

• Replacing the old air intake filter and the enclosure the filter is housed in with a larger, "high-volume" cold air intake without the boxed-in enclosure allows more air into the upper intake manifold. Adding more air allows better atomization between the air and fuel. In turn, the engine can burn more fuel. According to K&N Filters.com, adding a cold air intake kit can add up to 13.37 more horsepower.
  
  

MAF

• Once you add a cold air intake kit, the next part to add is a performance MAF (mass airflow sensor). The MAF tells the Monte Carlo's computer that more air is entering the intake and changes the way the computer reacts to the larger amount of air flowing into the engine. Adding a high-performance MAF to a Monte Carlo helps flow at least 45 percent more air through the engine.
  
  

Throttle Body

• You can complete the airflow intake upgrades with a larger, General Motors throttle body. The throttle body ultimately dictates how much air is capable of passing into the intake manifold of the Monte Carlo. When you add a high-flow filter and performance MAF, the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) throttle body doesn't allow all of that extra air into the engine.
  
  

Headers

• Headers are exhaust manifolds that are mandrel bent and "tuned" for performance engines. They allow more gas vapor to escape the engine than the stock exhaust manifolds. When you push more air into the engine, you must allow the extra gas vapor the ability to escape faster to make room. The result is more horsepower.
  
  

Performance Exhaust

• Installing a performance exhaust is the final component needed to get the unwanted exhaust vapor out of the way. Stock exhaust pipes are welded together in a manner that makes the gas bounce around. This slows the process. Performance exhausts are mandrel bent and smooth inside to enhance the flow of gas. Also, performance exhausts come with high-flow mufflers. These also help lower power-robbing restrictions.
  
  

ECU Tuners

• Once the engine can pull large amounts or air and can expel large amounts of gases, you need a computer tuner to tell the engine to provide more spark and fuel to the combustion chamber. The ECU tuner adds more horsepower and reconfigures the engine to enhance fuel efficiency and increase fuel mileage.
