Yet, if you are flying into London Heathrow with the intention of taking a transfer to Dover (or anywhere) in the southeast, you can save yourself a lot of grief by flying directly to Gatwick Airport.
Flying into Gatwick Airport brings you much closer to Dover and you can avoid London's traffic altogether.
Here's more detailed information on London's two major airports: Heathrow and Gatwick.
Gatwick's big advantage is that it's on a major British Railways line.
This gives you easy access to anywhere British Rails goes, including direct services to London Victoria station.
Gatwick Express trains run every 15 minutes from 05:20 to 00:50 and hourly overnight to London Victoria station.
Journey time 30 minutes.
Gatwick is 28 miles (45km) south of London, directly linked to the M23 at Junction 9 and to the A23 London-Brighton road.
Just a ten minute drive away, the M25 further connects with the UK's extensive road and motorway network.
Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest international airport, London Heathrow serves over 180 destinations in more than 90 countries.
Therefore you might end up passing through Heathrow on the way to many other destinations.
It's also the world's second busiest airport for cargo.
London Heathrow is 14 miles (21 kms) west of central London next to junction 4a of the M4 motorway or junction 14 of the M25.
If you're travelling on public transport it is at the western end of the Piccadilly underground line and served by a dedicated rail link (Heathrow Express) and a semi-fast link (Heathrow Connect) from London's Paddington train station.
Heathrow Airport is made up of 5 terminals.
Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are close together in the airport's center, within walking distance of each other via underground walkways.
Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 are separate from 1, 2 and 3.
Terminal 4 is on the south side and Terminal 5 is on the west side of the airport.
They can be reached from terminals 1, 2 and 3 via the free inter-terminal transfer service.
