If you are looking to add beauty and interest to any room with an ever-changing environment then a tropical fish tank may be the decorative item that you are looking for.
A tropical fish aquarium is a beautiful addition to any room.
Although many people admire these aquariums too many of them are afraid that they take too much time, effort and expense to set up and maintain.
In this article, we discuss some practical tips that will make setting up your tropical fish tank a breeze.
One of the first things you will want to do is research or consult with an aquarist to determine what type of fish, plant life and other livestock and decorations you want to include in your aquarium.
This will give you a good idea of what type of equipment and tropical fish tank you will need to buy.
Planning is key to having a successful set up.
After you have decided what types of fish, plants, decorations, etc you would like to include in your aquarium it is now time to choose a tropical fish tank.
If this is your first aquarium, it's best not to choose a tank that is too big or too small as they are much more difficult to care for.
A twenty to thirty gallon size tank should suffice for the novice.
Also, try to stick to regular shapes, square or round as unusual shapes are more difficult to keep clean and require more work to maintain.
After you have chosen your tropical fish tank, it's time to pick out a stand for your tank.
Many people think that they can use an old piece of furniture or makeshift stand.
Take caution in using something that is not rated for an aquarium tank and keep in mind that one gallon of water weighs ten pounds.
So, if you have a thirty-gallon fish tank your stand needs to be able to withstand a weight in excess of 300 pounds.
Now that you have chosen your tropical fish tank, stand, fish and other items you will be adding to your aquarium it is now time to determine the additional equipment needed to keep your aquarium looking great.
Again, you should consult with a qualified aquarist or conduct your own research in order to determine the necessary equipment for your aquarium.
Some common pieces of equipment include the following, water filtration systems, heaters or chillers, lighting and chemicals.
If your aquarium requires a lighting system, heater, or chiller it is a good idea to keep an extra one on hand in case of failure, this will ensure that your tropical fish tank is not at risk.
Finally, it's time to put it all together.
First, you want to setup any equipment that you need such as heaters, lights, and filtration systems.
Next, you can add any gravel and decorations and then plant life.
After all these items are added you can begin to add the water to the tropical fish tank.
You will want to allow the tank to run for about 48 hours with the plants, decorations, and equipment before you add the fish.
