Proper Resume Outline

104 14

    General Formatting

    • At the top of your resume, list your full name, mailing address and daytime phone number. You may also wish to include a fax number, cell phone number and email address. Number the bottom of each page if your resume is more than one page long.

    Objectives

    • Although it is optional, many job seekers choose to include an objectives section on their resume. This section is generally four to five sentences long and gives a brief overview of the applicant's credentials and career goals.

Make the content of the objectives section unique; do not simply restate information that you will mention in the later parts of your resume. Instead, highlight accomplishments, specialized skills and work-related goals that can stand on their own as professional selling points.

    Education

    • The education section should list all schools where you have matriculated. For each school, list the degree obtained; major and minor or course of study; city and state where the school is located; and dates that you attended that school. Also list the month and year that your degree was conferred. Mention if you graduated with honors or had a grade point average of 3.4 to 4.0 or higher in this section.

You may also include professional certifications and licenses in the education section of your resume if they are applicable to the job to which you are applying. For each license or certificate, include the dates for which you have held a valid license. Also indicate what state and licensing board issued the certification.

    Experience

    • Following the education section, provide a chronological outline of your work experience, beginning with your most recent position. On the first line, list your job title, the name of your employer, the city and state where the company is based, and the dates that you worked for the company.

For each position, include two to five sentences describing your accomplishments and primary responsibilities in that position. It is acceptable to format your job description either as a list with bullets or as a paragraph.

Include volunteer employment and projects in your work experience section if you are a student, recent graduate or are re-entering the workforce after taking time off. You should, however, indicate that these were unpaid or intern-level positions so you won't misrepresent your level of professional experience.
