Huntingdon - Situated in East Anglia

103 13
Huntingdon is a small town situated at the county of Cambridgeshire in East Anglia.
During the long English History, Huntingdon was mostly known as the administrative centre and county town of Huntingdonshire, although now it belongs to the county of Cambridgeshire remaining though the seat of the area's district council.
Although the town is a really known place, it is mostly referred to as the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell.
Huntingdon was founded by the Anglo-Saxons, many centuries ago, while the Danes' influence is still obvious.
It found prosperity during the 15th century and later on during the medieval years, because it was the main bridging point of the Great Ouse River.
During the 1900s it became a large coaching centre and market town.
Huntingdon features still the much known and well preserved bridge that is mentioned in many historical books; this bridge used to be the main passing route over the river, and ceased to be the sole passing point in 1975, with the development of the A14 crossing pass.
Its history though is quite diverse and rich, going far beyond Cromwell.
There are indications of Roman life in the area, as many villas built by Romans were found in Huntingdon.
It was in the 11th century when William the Conqueror tried to expand the town, building the Huntington Castle, which lasted though just a little, as it was destroyed by Henry the 2nd almost hundred years later.
Cromwell was the one who rebuilt and fortified the castle once more.
The site now is one of the most known and recognised landmarks of the town and the Cambridgeshire county.
Due to its long history many legends have been born in the region; one of the most known refers to the Alconbury Brook Bridge; the famous Hinchingbrooke House, one of the Cromwell's houses, is also said to be haunted.
Cambridgshire is home of the famous University, carols in King's College Chapel and punting on the river Cam.
