How to Rescreen Wood Windows

    • 1). Pry off the molding that covers the edges of the screen you're replacing, using a flat bar. Gently work the edges up along the molding with the flat bar until you can remove each piece.

    • 2). Remove the staples that are holding the screen in place, using a flat-head screwdriver and pliers. Pull the screen off the screen frame. Brush off the wood where the screen was fastened to clean off any debris.

    • 3). Roll a new length of screen over the screen frame. Trim the screen material with a utility knife, leaving approximately 2 inches of overhang around the perimeter of the frame. This will allow you to grasp the screen to pull it taut while you fasten it to the frame.

    • 4). Staple the top of the screen in place. Space the staples evenly, approximately 1 every inch. Pull the screen taut as you staple along the bottom of the screen frame. Then work your way along each side of the frame, pulling the screen evenly taut as you staple it in place. Cut off any excess screen.

    • 5). Tap the old brads out of the molding if they're in bad condition and replace with new ones. If the old ones are in good shape, leave them in the molding. Put the molding back in place on the window screen frame. Drive the brads into the existing holes to fasten the molding in place on the frame.
