How to Dye a White Satin Dress
- 1). Remove any stains from the dress prior to dyeing. Stains will absorb the dye differently than the rest of the dress. Wait for the dress to dry completely to ensure the stain is removed, or has faded, before proceeding.
- 2). Soak the gown in a tub of water. The dye will absorb into the fibers better if the gown is wet prior to placing it into the dye. Push the dress down into the water to saturate it completely.
- 3). Mix the dye on a stove top pot according to the fabric dye instructions. Each manufacturer will have a different set of directions; therefore, refer to the back of the box for appropriate dye and water measurements. Set the temperature to simmer.
- 4). Remove the dress from the water and squeeze the fabric to remove as much water as possible. Place the dress into the dye and begin stirring immediately. You will stir the dress, with a wooden spoon, for the first 15 minutes to ensure the dye is distributed evenly throughout the fabric.
- 5). Wait for the water temperature to reach 120 degrees. This temperature will open the cuticles on the fibers. Leave the dress to simmer for the recommended time.
- 6). Remove the pot from the heat source and transfer the dress to a bathtub or sink. Rinse the dye from the dress using cool water. If the dress is too dark, use hot water to rinse the dye to fade the color. If the dress is too light, rinse the dress and wait for it to dry and then repeat the process.
- 7). Hang the dress to dry in a bathtub, or place it in the washing machine. Set the washing machine water temperature to cold.
