Moose hunting in Maine is regulated through the Maine Fisheries and Wildlife Management Department. Each year the department holds a lottery for a specific number of “tags”, or hunting permits. The number averages 3,000 per year. Residents may purchase six lottery chances; nonresidents can buy any number of chances in blocks of ten. You can also purchase a moose tag in a sealed bid auction with profits going to young hunter’s education programs. Ten auction bids are awarded each year. - Located deep in the wilderness of Northern Maine near the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, the Ross Lake’s moose hunting area ranges over 3,500,000 acres of private Maine woods. The proprietors boast of 100 percent success in hunting moose. Moose hunting packages include primitive hunting camp cabins, home-cooked meals in the camp lodge and one-on-one individual guides provided. Cabins sleep as few as three people up to 11. Each cabin has gas lighting, stoves and refrigerators and wood stoves for heating. There are outhouses and a central hot water shower. You must have won a moose hunting permit to participate. The hunting package is for six nights and five days; however if you haven’t hunted down your moose, the company will give you an extra day free of charge to continue the hunt. Package prices vary and are available upon request.
