What to Look for When Buying a Used Piano
- The size of a piano is a key aspect to any purchase. There will be a need for ample room for the piano to be situated and consideration must to be given to access points within a home so it can be put into place without the need for dismantling. There must be space available for a piano stool and room for the player to access the instrument comfortably.
- Choose a modern used piano that has been made from timber that has been kiln-dried. This type of wood is ideal for home use and will not warp from the effects of home heating systems. The kiln-drying process reinforces structural strength and the synthetic adhesives used on modern pianos are also resistant to heat. The wrest plank of the piano should be made from multi-ply wood so the tuning pins do not become loose. This type of wood will also stop the wrest plank from cracking.
- Perhaps most importantly, the piano should play correctly. When purchasing a piano, whether bought on a private basis or through a music store, it is advisable to take along someone who has extensive knowledge of the instrument. Ideally, a music tutor or professional musician, someone who has experience with many types of pianos, should be engaged. Play a few chords yourself before making a final decision. What may be comfortable for one player may not be comfortable for another.
