106 229
Definition: short for â??accompany.â? When a jazz soloist is improvising, the members of the rhythm section comp for him by providing the pulse, groove, and harmonic structure of the tune. Comping also involves interaction with the soloist, so although they are not featured, the members of the rhythm section are also improvising to some degree while they are comping.

Examples: The piano player will comp as the saxophonist improvises.
