How to Hook Up a Tub & Shower Drain
- 1). Unscrew the pop-up from the drain body (the metal part that will rest in the bottom of the tub). Caulk both the underside of the drain flange (the flat part of the drain body) and the recess in the tub where the drain will be placed. Then insert the drain body into the hole.
- 2). Hold onto the center of the drain with needle-nose pliers. On the bottom of the tub, tighten the plastic elbow on the drain body. Use the needle-nose pliers to keep the drain from moving during this step.
- 3). Attach the overflow cover to the tub body with the provided screws. Assemble the pipe that will go between the overflow cover and the drain, and dry-fit them in place. Cut the pipe to fit if it does not fit perfectly between drain and overflow. Once you are satisfied with the fit, glue all the joints with CPVC glue. You can now install the tub.
There is an additional part to this step for installing a cable-controlled drain. For a cable-controlled drain, the overflow cover will include a handle. There will be a cable that runs alongside the pipes, connecting the handle to the stopper. Connect this cable when installing the overflow cover and the drain. - 4). Connect the tub drain to the main drainpipe with a 3-inch flexible T-fitting. Hold the T-fitting up to the drainpipe and mark the drainpipe where the ends of the flanges (the raised sections on either end) hit the drainpipe. Use a reciprocating saw to cut away the drainpipe on your marks. Fit the T-fitting into the gap you have created in the drainpipe, turn it to receive the tub drain, and tighten the clamps. Insert the tub-drain trap pipes into the T-fitting and tighten all the clamps. Screw the center pop-up back into the drain.
