How to Paver a Walkway
- 1). Mark out the path you want your walkway to follow by driving in stakes and stretching string between them.
- 2). Measure the width and length of the walkway to determine how much crushed gravel and concrete sand you need, as well as how many pavers are needed.
- 3). Dig out the walkway, making the trench 8 inches deep. Keep the floor of the trench level and run the tamper or compactor over it to make a solid, stable surface.
- 4). Pour a four-inch layer of crushed gravel over the base of the walkway trench. Level the gravel and compact it with the tamper or compactor.
- 5). Add a two-inch layer of concrete sand over the crushed gravel. Level and compact this layer.
- 1). Determine the pattern that you will lay the pavers in. Alternate the pavers so that the ends of the pavers are not even with each other to make a more stable walkway.
- 2). Begin at one end of the walkway and lay in the pavers, following the pattern you determined. If a paver needs cut, mark it with chalk, and cut with the saw or splitter.
- 3). After all of the pavers have been laid, sweep concrete sand over the top of the walkway to fill in the cracks between the pavers.
- 4). Compact the entire surface, and then sweep in more concrete sand.
