Properly Caring For Your Furniture to Increase Its Life and Value

103 12
When you purchase a new car you try to take care of it so that it will last you many years and have a high resale value when you are ready to buy a new vehicle.
You may do the same with your home.
Why wouldn't you do that with your furniture as well? Unfortunately many people don't take proper care of their furniture, which they spend dear money on.
The first key to properly caring for your furniture is to keep it clean.
Vacuuming your cloth furniture, wiping leather down with a damp cloth, and polishing wood should be done every day.
When something is spilled on the furniture later it will not stain as badly or be as hard to clean if there is not a layer of dust and everyday dirt on the furniture surface beneath the spill.
Make sure you clean with the proper supplies.
Only use light furniture cleaner approved for upholstery fabrics, and use wood oil rather than dusting spray on your wood items.
If you have used furniture you can easily restore it and then care for it properly to maintain it.
You can strip wood, sand it, and revarnish or paint it.
You can also strip upholstery off of a sofa or chair and reupholster it with new fabric.
Leather furniture can be reupholstered directly over the worn leather.
Then care for the furniture normally.
There are many ways you can deal with minor scratches or blemishes in your furniture.
Scratches or small nicks in wood can often be treated with a special compound the color of your wood that actually fills in the scratch or dent and makes it appear that it was never there.
If you have many scratches and nicks, such as can happen from children on a wood dining table, consider having the entire table resurfaced and varnished, after the children are grown of course.
If you have a minor rip or tear in a couch or chair cushion, simply patch it or stitch it up and flip the cushion over.
No one will know its there if they cannot see it! If the cushion cannot be flipped or if you have more than one rip consider reupholstering.
Alternatively, you can avoid rips, tears, and stains altogether by simply purchasing furniture covers for all of your chairs and sofas.
You can take the covers off for company, but leave them on for every day use to protect the furniture.
