American Art Clay Company - Pioneer in Consumer Safety
The American Art Clay Company has always been a leader in the field of consumer safety since its founding in 1919. AMACO's latest innovation is the launching of a state of the art program to provide all distributors of its craft products with Consumer Product Safety Commission certificates. The hundreds of AMACO clays, glazes, and sculpting and modeling materials are submitted to the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI), which is charged with insuring that art materials made for children's use are safely formulated, for evaluation to insure that they are non-toxic and lead-free. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act passed in 2008 requires distributors of art materials for children to have certificates of conformity. In order to insure that all AMACO products are lead-free and in compliance with the Act, AMACO has created a password-protected online digital data bank which enables its distributors to access certificates.
AMACO has always been a pioneer in art supply safety. In 1936 it was a founding member of ACMI, which is dedicated to setting industry standards to promote the use of safe ingredients in creating art materials. ACMI employs a laboratory of toxicologists to test, evaluate, and review product safety and labeling to comply with federal regulations. But in historical fact, AMACO and ACMI have long set the standards which governmental regulators later adopted. This proactive approach to safety for potters, hobbyists, and schools has long been AMACO's motto and mandate. Long before it was mandated by federal law, all AMACO glaze formulations exceeded the criteria for what in 2011 will be federal standards. AMACO has its own staff of ceramics engineers who work closely with the ACMI toxicologists to insure that all AMACO clays, lead-free glazes, and modeling materials are well within the federal guidelines for AP lead-free and non-toxic formulations. AMACO produces some six hundred lead-free glaze formulations for professional and school use, and is renowned as the standard of reliability and quality for use in American schools.
With the increased federal emphasis upon the continuing importance of the arts as part of core academic subject matter as well as an important part of a well-rounded education, more grants for model art education programs have become available to schools. The schools in turn must ensure parents that all the materials and products used in their districts are in compliance with safe federal standards for lead and other toxic material content. Teachers have learned that they can rely upon American Art Clay Co. to be a resource for safe-quality products, labeling, tech support, and art lesson plans. Since the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act mandates full transparency for teachers and parents that all children's products are lead-free, AMACO's state of the art digital data bank of Consumer Safety Product Commission conformity certificates is again on the forefront of consumer product safety. AMACO is always ready to address any technical issues or questions about its products in order to best serve its customers and put their minds to rest about safety issues.
