What Are Hinged Stamps?

    Hinges

    • Hinges are used to mount inexpensive stamps. They are folded, gummed pieces of translucent paper.

    Using Hinges

    • Hinges have two flaps. The short flap is moistened and affixed to the stamp. The longer flap is moistened and mounted on an album page.

    Disadvantages of Hinges

    • When a hinge is peeled off, it will remove some of the backing gum. If not removed carefully, it can also thin or tear the stamp's paper. Hinges often are made from acidic paper, and acid from the hinge can damage a stamp.

    Recognizing a Hinged Stamp

    • A hinged stamp has been removed from an album to sell or trade. Hinged stamps can easily be recognized because the hinge will leave a mark when peeled from the stamp. Also, the acidic hinge paper will discolor the stamp's backing.

    Recommended Mounts

    • Hinging a stamp lowers its value because collectors prize never-hinged stamps. Archival plastic mounts are recommended for displaying mint (unused) stamps. Though more expensive, plastic mounts will better protect stamps by encapsulating them. They will also not cause hinge-type damage.
