Homemade iPod Scratch Removal

104 16

    Cleaning

    • Pick up the iPod by the edges so that the screen is not being touched. Clean the screen by blowing dust and debris off of it with a camel's hair brush or by flicking at it with the edge of a lintless cloth. Inspect the screen under a bright light to make sure that it has been completely cleared of dust or debris.

    Preparation

    • Continue holding the iPod by the edges to avoid contact with the screen. Clean the screen of fingerprints by using a single-use, moistened eyeglass cleaning cloth. This will make the scratches stand out so that they can be easily seen. Place the iPod on a clean surface, screen-side up.

    Materials

    • Take a tube of regular toothpaste and squeeze a small amount onto a glass plate. Have a microfiber polishing cloth ready.

    Application

    • Apply a small amount of the toothpaste to a section of the microfiber polishing cloth. With the iPod in front of you with the screen side up, take the cloth and gently wipe the screen. Rub the cloth in a circular pattern over the area where the scratch or scratches are.

    Evaluation

    • Stop rubbing the iPod's screen after a few seconds and inspect it to see if the scratches have become less noticeable. If not, apply more toothpaste to a clean section of the microfiber polishing cloth and repeat the process.

    Finishing

    • When the scratch or scratches have become faint or invisible, blow off any dust and remove residual toothpaste from the screen using the microfiber cleaning cloth. Leave the iPod alone for at least an hour to dry. Take another single-use, moistened eyeglass cleaning cloth and gently go across the screen in an up-and-down motion to clean it. Put the iPod down with the screen side up and leave it until the screen has dried.

    Commercial Alternatives

    • There are commercial products that can be used to clean the iPod screen. They work in a similar fashion to toothpaste but use different chemical formulations. These products can be found in hobby stores and online.
