Varied locations and beautiful light are just two reasons why film and photography productions return year after year to South Africa.
Cape Town in particular makes a fantastic base for those looking for a whole range of very different locations from mountain to beach, vineyard to street style, historic buildings to modern cityscapes.
Here we pick out a few of the picturesque fishing villages and working harbours that make great locations if your shoot needs a flavour of salty marine lifestyle for its setting.
Arniston An unspoiled traditional fishing village with lime-washed and thatched houses, the whole village of Arniston has been declared a national monument.
Fishermen still go to sea in the traditional fishing boats of two centuries ago.
It is at the southernmost tip of South Africa, close to Cape Agulhas with sand dunes, craggy cliffs and white beaches.
Gansbaai A small scale fishing industry is the backbone of Gansbaai's economy with active trawlers and a rough and ready harbour.
Shark spotting, whale watching and many adventure activities draw visitors and the backdrop of mountains enclosing the rocky coastline and sandy beaches adds plenty of variety to photography.
The caves at De Kelders add a dramatic element to the locations available here.
Kalk Bay A picturesque fishing village on the Cape peninsula, Kalk Bay is ideal for those wanting a fishing background in close proximity to Cape Town.
A working harbour with small fishing boats, it is just down the coast from Simonstown, the larger naval base.
The shops, restaurants and houses of Kalk bay back the harbour up the lower slopes of the mountain, giving way to fynbos and rocky slopes above.
Cape Town Harbour If boats are what you need for your film production the busy port and harbours of Cape Town have every variety imaginable, from elegant yachts, to industrial container ships, large fishing boats, small passenger boats of all descriptions and luxury liners.
There are the clean and restored wharfs of the V&A Waterfront catering to visitors and locals at leisure, or the working docks of the commercial harbour, all with the distinctive silhouette of Table Mountain in the background.
Paternoster Whitewashed cottages clinging to a hillside overlooking a bay strewn with small fishing boats on the sandy beach, Paternoster is a historic fishing village on the West Coast 145 km north of Cape Town.
Fishermen still catch crayfish and snoek and sell it in the fish market next to the beach.
There are smooth rocky outcrops plunging into a turquoise sea and the Cape Columbine lighthouse watching over all.
As with all public spaces in South Africa, permits need to be applied for to use any of these places as locations for your film or photography production.
