How to Start Growing Mushrooms

    • 1). Fill a shallow container with the appropriate medium and place mushroom spawn on top of it. For white button mushrooms, use composted manure. For shitake mushrooms, use hardwood or hardwood sawdust. For oyster mushrooms, use a straw medium. Keep the temperature at around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This may require keeping it in a heated room or sunny window. In about three weeks, roots or filaments will begin to spread into the medium.

    • 2). Reduce the temperature to 60 degrees Fahrenheit by placing the container in a darkened room like a closet or basement.

    • 3). Cover the spawn with a 1-inch layer of potting soil.

    • 4). Cover the container with a damp cloth. Spray the cloth lightly with water as it dries to keep it damp.

    • 5). Spray the soil's surface with water to keep it slightly damp. If the mushroom spawn is in a heated indoor air, spray every other day.

    • 6). Maintain cloth and soil dampness and temperature for three to four weeks.

    • 7). Harvest mushrooms when the caps are fully open and separated from the stem section.
