Location of the Speed Sensor in a 1997 Explorer

    • 1). Turn off the Explorer engine, and remove the ignition key. Apply your emergency brake.

    • 2). Raise the passenger's side of your Explorer with a hydraulic jack positioned at the rear of the front tire. Place a jack stand under the frame rail for extra support.

    • 3). Slide under your Explorer directly in line with the side view mirrors.

    • 4). Locate the vehicle speed sensor on the side of your Explorer's transmission. The VSS has one bolt holding it in place and has a bundle of wires connected to it. The sensor resembles a spark plug. To remove the switch, unplug it, remove its bolt with a socket wrench and pull it away from the transmission.
