How to Install a Window Air Conditioner Inside a Room
- 1). Choose a window for the air conditioner. It's best to place the air conditioner away from stairwells so the cold air does not drop too quickly. Select a window that has a nearby electrical outlet.
- 2). Measure the width and height of the open window area and obtain an air conditioner that will fit.
- 3). Install the exterior support bracket on the outside of the window. The bracket supports the weight of the portion of the air conditioner that extends out of the window. The bracket can be secured to the side of the house with masonry screws or to the bottom of the window frame.
- 4). Place the air conditioner in the window. In a double hung window, lower the sash so it rests on top of the air conditioner and helps to hold it in place.
- 5). Pull out the accordion panels on the sides of the unit so they extend to cover any open space between the unit and the window frame. Screw the panels to the window frame to secure them in place. This will help keep bugs out of your home.
- 6). Place a piece of weather stripping between the open window sashes. With the lower sash opened, a gap will result between the sashes that will allow air and bugs to travel through if it isn't filled.
- 7). Plug the unit into the electrical outlet and follow the manufacturer's instructions to begin cooling your home.
