Supernatural Fire

106 17
There is a haunted wood near my town called Shenks Ferry. The story goes that there was once a hotel on the land that mysteriously caught fire back in the early 1920s and 72 people died. We kids used to go back there at night and party it up since there weren't a lot if other things to do.

One night a couple of friends and I went back and started smoking cigarettes and telling creepy stories when headlights suddenly washed over us.

We froze in the glare and then realized with horror that it was a police car. The cop got out, interrogated us a little bit, and when he realized we weren't drinking or doing anything illegal, he turned to go, stating that the place gave him "the creeps."

At this, we immediately started asking him if he ever saw anything weird there. He said he did, but it's not a typical ghost story. It was something just plain bizarre:

He was doing his nightly rounds one night and ended up down in Shenks Ferry because he saw what he thought was a light shining through the trees. Assuming it was partiers, he got out of his vehicle and shined his flashlight down the path, but nobody was there. He didn't even hear voices. The forest was deathly still. He said he felt like he was the only alive thing there.

Creeped out, he turned to go when something caught his eye: a strange flicker of fire leapt up from the path about 50 yards down. He started toward the strange fire, and with every step he took, the fire lowered a few inches.

By the time he got to the spot, it had completely disappeared! When he shined his flashlight on it, there didn't even seem to be a charred area on the ground!

The policemen turned away and quickly started back to the car. When he got about 15 feet away, the fire started up again! He whipped around, shining his light every which way, but nobody was about. Nothing was moving except this small three-foot fire. Once again, he ran up to it and once again, the fire dwindled and went out. He kicked the dirt away, but there was simply no sign of a fire.

So he began backing away with his eyes on the spot and once he got about 20 feet from it, the mysterious fire started up again, raising every few inches with every step he took.

Realizing he was probably dealing with something supernatural, the officer ran the last few steps to his vehicle, jumped in, took one last frightened glance at the now enormous burning fire that was now reaching the tree-tops and peeled out of there!

The officer looked scared just retelling his story, so I have no question of its credibility. Of course, after he told us to be careful and left, we were soon close behind him! That story was way too weird for us, and I certainly wasn't going to stick around to see how much truth there was to it!
