How to Prepare a Foundation for an Outdoor Storage Shed
- 1). Delineate the dimensions of the foundation by marking the corners with wooden stakes and tying string between. Make the dimensions 2 feet longer than the dimensions of the shed.
- 2). Dig out the area within the stakes and string to a depth of 3 inches.
- 3). Rake the bottom of the dug area to even out the ground, then compact the dirt with a hand tamper. A hand tamper is a heavy, flat weight with a handle attached that you lift and drop.
- 4). Line the perimeter edge with landscape edging. Stake the edging in place so the top edge is even with the level of the surrounding ground.
- 5). Line the bottom of the dug area with weed-blocking fabric.
- 6). Fill the dug area with mixed-size aggregate. Do not use aggregate with equal-size rocks, as it does not compact as well. Compact the aggregate using the hand tamper.
