The New Zealand Goat Hunting Guide

102 15
New Zealand weather is never a sure thing - in the space of 24 hours a hunter can experience all four seasons, but what is the hunting guide 's tip for the best goat hunting weather?

Of course, the goats will be on the mountain regardless of the weather, but New Zealand's aptitude for scrolling through the seasons in a matter of hours means great goat hunting conditions. Like most other species, they like to bask in the sun and dislike heavy rain (although they will continue to crop through drizzle) so they are easiest to find when the sun reappears following a wet spell. If bad weather is expected for several days, aim to hunt on the day that the weather starts to clear and the animals re-emerge from beneath the shelter of rocky overhangs.

Obviously, if your only available hunting days are during the worst of the expected weather, it may not be as much fun hunting in the rain but it beats no hunting at all - and that is what wet weather gear is for. The goats won't be going anywhere, so go and find their shelter. Try to avoid going too high and avoid crossing any swollen rivers (don't cross in light flow and then get stranded on the wrong side - if you do, wait it out!) There is always plan B - burning lots of firewood in a snug warm hut. Don't forget that rain is only water - it dries or washes off.

Generally, winter is a good time to hunt goats. They tend to stay under cover until the sun comes out so that they can sun themselves as they graze. This of course means you don't have to start too early either. Look for them on the morning sun side of the mountain. Hunt into the wind and you will smell them before you see them. You are most likely to hear them before you see them too as they are usually fairly active and pretty vocal in the early morning or as the sun returns following a downpour. Just don't forget that they have pretty good eyesight too.

The top hunting guide tip is never to pass up on a hunting trip because of the weather. It often clears unexpectedly and nobody can accurately forecast it 48hours ahead. Just make sure that you are well prepared, you have a plan B, your gun is firing straight and true and you find a willing soul to help with the carry out!
