How to Register a UK Trade Mark
- 1). Search the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) website (see Resources) for any other registered trade marks that are identical to the one you want register.
- 2). Review each search result for similarities and make sure you haven't used any ideas that have been previously trade marked.
- 3). Find the classification for your trade mark. Use the classification search on the Intellectual Property Office website (see Resources). You need this classification when filling in your form.
- 4). Fill out the IPO trade mark registration form through their application wizard available in their website (see Resources). You can also download the application form from the IPO website. If you apply through paper, you will also need to fill out the fee sheet for your registration-processing fee. Submit your paper application and your fee sheet to the following address:

United Kingdom - 5). Pay the registration-processing fee. The fee to register a trade mark in the United Kingdom is £200. Another £ 50 is added for each additional class of goods and services there are for your trade mark. You will know how many classes there are for your trade mark after you find its classification which you did in Step 3. If you pay the fee within the time that you filed your online application, you will get a discount of £30 off the total processing fee. You can pay using most credit or debit cards, pre-registered deposit account, check, cash or postal order for both online and paper application. Send proof to the IPO that you made the payment.
- 6). Allow the IPO to examine your application. After six working days, the IPO will send you a filing receipt and application number. You will receive these details through post if you used the paper application and through email if you applied online. You will receive an examination report a month after you filed your trade mark application.
- 7). Receive a certificate of registration upon approval of registration and publication in the Trade Marks Journal. You will get your certificate two months after your trade mark is published.
