    • 1). Clear space in your workshop. You will need space on your workbench to disassemble the engine and lay out the parts. Ideally, you should have an engine stand to mount it on.

    • 2). Hoist the engine out of the Jeep. Get someone to help with this, since the engine is heavy.

    • 3). Remove the engine head and cylinder block and disassemble them. Have sufficient room available that you can store each part in the order you removed it. This will help you know the order that the valves, pistons and other pieces were installed in. You could also take photos and make notes.

    • 4). Inspect the parts for damage. Take the engine block, head, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons and connecting rods assembly and valves to a machine shop. Here they will be cleaned, inspected for cracks and other damage, honed and repaired.

    • 5). Use the machine shop's recommendations to buy the rebuilding supplies you need. These may include gaskets, seals, piston rings, bearings, valves and rocker arms.

    • 6). Mount the engine to the engine block. Be sure to follow the service manual directions for the sequence for torque, screw and bolt tightening. The manual will also advise you on lubrication.

    • 7). Assemble the engine head. Use a valve spring compressor to install valves. You will also need this to install the head on the engine block.

    • 8). Hoist the engine back in to the Jeep. Again, ask someone to assist you with this stage.
