Book Summary
Whether you are a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, family friend, teacher, etc., most of us are always looking for ways to help us raise our darling girls from the inside out. "Do These Pants Make Me Look Fat?" is a book that can help you do just that! It's a fun read with whimsical color illustrations that guides the reader through addressing the serious issues of negative self-talk, self-confidence, poor body image and bullying.

What's especially wonderful about this book is that it engages both children ages 6-13 as well as adults. It gives the readers a valuable tool to create fun, proactive dialogue around these very important topics. As an extra value, the book includes a helpful discussion guide at the end to guide readers through a constructive conversation.

Why The Book Was Written
Andrea wrote the book after a particularly trying morning with her nine year old daughter, Zoie -- the drama of the day was clothing. Zoie was afraid if she wore Abercrombie again the girls in her class would make fun of her (again). Understand that we aren't talking about the "mean girls" depicted in books and movies - we are talking about girls Zoie spends time with and calls "friends". Needless to say, there was much crying and frustration involved that morning and after Zoie was finally on her way to school, Andrea headed to the bookstore.

Why the bookstore? Well, like any girl from the age of 6-20, Zoie was prone to say "Enough talk Mom!" after about 30 seconds of listening to Andrea trying to walk through issues that needed to be addressed. She needed some help, something she could give Zoie to initiate conversation without all the words coming from "Mom".

Unfortunately, it was not the first time, she came back blank as far as a book that might help her sit down together with Zoie to address the issues of the morning in a more constructive way. So, this book is the start of Andrea's journey into author hood - to deliver a solution that she and others can use to initiate tough conversations with our wonderfully complex girls.

Ultimately, Andrea is hoping to impact her daughter and her daughter's friends attitudes. She hopes young girls can learn early on to recognize when someone in their group is saying something hurtful about themselves or another - and to be strong enough to call each other out on it. Maybe this type of positive peer pressure can help them work together to stop. We shouldn't have to soothe a young girl when she comes home saying another 8 year old "friend" told her that her butt was big - at 8 (and told to a skinny little girl)! Sometimes when this happens we say to ourselves or our girls..."well they are just saying this or that because they are jealous" or "they say it because they feel bad about themselves". We need to stop having to make these excuses. We need to teach our girls to be joyful with themselves and others without petty, unnecessary jealousy - let's teach them to be happy something good happened to someone else and rejoice in their opportunity. Our daughters should be self confident enough to ignore the mean-stuff and strong enough to call each other on it. After all, if they are "friends" this nonsense shouldn't be happening.
