The Group of Monuments

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the group of temples at this ancient city is a manifestation of the Indo-Aryan architecture. These exquisite temples were built a thousand years ago (950-1050 AD), when the Chandela dynasty ruled over Central India. After their decline in the 13th century, the temples remained enveloped in the dense cover of date palm trees until a British army engineer rediscovered them in 1838. Notably, only 22 temples of the original 85 survived the ravage of time. The remaining structures have been divided into the Western, Eastern and Southern geographical groups. The Western Group, housing the magnificent Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, is certainly the most revered and the best known complex of the three.

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the largest of the medieval age temples within the complex. Built in 1050 AD by Vidyadhara, one of the greatest Chandela kings, this shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main spire of this temple rises to a height of 31 m as a depiction of the abode of Shiva, Mt. Kailash. There are six interior compartments within the main shrine; the sanctum that holds a marble Shivlinga, main hall, portico, transept, vestibule and ambulatory. A total of 84 miniature spires surround the main structure. The outer walls of the transept showcase revered Hindu gods and groups of lovers engaged in lovemaking. Apparently, the forbidden erotic art of Kama Sutra, displayed throughout the temple complex, is one-of-its-kind in the world.
