Handyman Building Projects

Consider the handyman -- a do-it-yourself type of person. They have the know-how to take on just about any building or remodeling project around the home from carpentry to plumbing to electrical and HVAC. Building projects that add permanent structures, modify the structural integrity of your home, or make significant changes to your home usually require building permits. Talking with your local building department code enforcement officials before you start a project can save you a lot of headache later. - Build a shed to store lawn and garden equipment and tools. These projects can be simple or complex, depending on the size and design chosen. Kits are available that turn building in assembly work and many designs are available. This is a good project for the handyman or do-it-yourself homeowner as it adds both real and aesthetic value to a home. Sheds can be built on footings or slabs, depending on local codes and your preferences.
- A fence around your property defines the boundaries and provides a degree of privacy. Some fences are built as privacy fences or screens, which block the view of your yard from neighbors and passers-by. You can buy fence sections at home centers or build your own from scratch. Choose from many styles and heights to suit your own needs, requirements and local building codes.
- This project will not be for every handyman, but given the time and the skill, a home addition adds living space and value. Expect to live with dust and noise throughout the project. Additions can include attached garages which add convenience and protect vehicles from the elements. Additions require building permits, architect plans and engineering approvals. Be sure to talk to your building department before you start the process to avoid wasted time, money and your own aggravation.
- Upper floors in older homes or basements in just about any home are excellent places to consider adding a bathroom. Having more bathrooms adds convenience, value and saleability to your home. A new bathroom can be a simple powder room with just a commode and a sink, or a full bath with the addition of a shower or tub. Check your building department for codes, permits and requirements.
- Finishing a basement is a big project and professionals with a crew take six to ten weeks to complete it depending on the basement size. A do-it-yourself homeowner or handyman will take longer. If you do the entire basement, it is comparable to finishing the entire first floor of your home. The rewards in added living space, uses for new rooms and increased home value are well worth the investment in time and money.
