CD Burning Rights

104 48

    Copying your CDs

    • It's legal to burn copies of non-pirated CDs that you have purchased yourself as long as the copies are for your own personal use. Making copies to sell or give away is illegal and could attract action from rights holders.

    Digital Files

    • You are permitted to burn digital files that you have purchased legally from a legitimate source to CD for your own personal use. Some digital files contain Digital Rights Management (DRM) that will limit the number of times a file can be burnt or not allow a file to be copied at all.

    Penalties

    • It is illegal to burn copyrighted material to CD and distribute it irrespective of whether you legally own the original recording. If you profit financially from doing so, you could face a heavy fine and jail time.
