The hero of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (LSTCK) might be struggling to find the secret recipe of Punjabâs world famous (pun intended) Chicken Khurana, but Anurag Kashyap and director Sameer Sharma have definitely mixed the right spices to make this lip-smacking entertainer.
Kashyapâs LSTCK is quite different from his kind of cinema, which has been dark and serious so far. This one is a happy and fun-filled entertainer. An ode to the Punjabis and their love for their kukkad-shukkad, LSTCK goes beyond the usual loud and caricature-ish portrayal of Punjabis.
In fact, this one sheds light on the real simple Punjabis whose life is full of love and compassion. They donât belong to Kaneda or London but to real Punjab. And the credit of the same goes to debutante director Sameer Sharma and co-writer, who did their homework right. Then be it in characterization or choosing the location. Another thing remarkably captured by the two is the - North ki sardi. Those who have seen it would miss it terribly after watching the film.
This foodie story tells you the tale of selfish Omi (Kunal Kapoor), who ditches his family run âdhabaâ and flees away to London with all the family. All he leaves behind is a âSorryâ note for his then girl-friend Harman (Huma Qureshi). And now heâs back after ten years once again in dire need of money, which he can get only if he finds out the secret recipe of the infamous delicacy âChicken Khurana.â But who has it? His senile Daarji (Vinod Nagpal), who has lost his memory and is on his death bed.
What makes Omiâs search interesting is the careful mix of characters that come into his life. His loving cousin Jeet (Rahul Bagga), his mother, Titu mama and of course his childhood love, Harman, who is now engaged to Jeet. Will the old spark ignite again? Will the kanjar Omi and Kameeni Harman unite again? Will Omi crack the code of Chicken Khurana or will it be lost forever with Daarji. Find out as you watch the film.
Is that all? Well, yes and no. While the search for the secret keeps you on the edge, somewhere you also know where the story is heading but still your interest doesn't get lost. Thatâs because how the director and the writer have treated the script. Well-timed comedy thatâs akin to thet (pure) Punjabis, rib-tickling dialogue and heart-winning characters and situations - when join a taut and well-edited script - you get Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, where the first half establishes the story lazily and the second takes you on a laugh-ride with no-loo-break moments.
Talking about performance, a clean shaven Kunal Kapoor looks as endearing as he is hate-worthy playing the self-centered Omi. Huma Qureshi impresses yet again in the girl-next-door avatar after âGangs of Wasseypurâ. LSTCK is yet another film where supporting cast is as important as the lead stars, especially the eccentric Titu mama (Rajesh Sharma). You canât resist laughing every time he is in the frame. His hold on the character shows his finesse as an actor. Another peculiar character is played by Dolly Ahluwalia, who plays a Guruma (Godwoman), who sniffs drugs when not addressing her disciples. After all, âagyanta param anandâ is her moto! Amit Trivediâs music hits the right rustic chords and gel well with the theme of the film. (Read the music review of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, here)
With perfect tadka of finely etched characters, great performances, fine script and of course sadda Punjab, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is definitely a worth watching movie!
