Children often grow up with a collection of cards that contain pictures of their favorite cartoon characters, legendary heroes, and anything else that catch their attention.
As they grow older, their interests change.
At this point of their life, they become more finicky and collect only the best and valuable cards.
For most men who are basketball fanatics, these cards are one of the top collections.
These men are very particular with NBA collectibles such as the trading cards.
While some just buy for the sake of personal satisfaction, others buy them for business and money-making purposes; thus, trading cards.
What is a trading card then? It is a small card usually made out of cardboard or thick paper.
It contains a character's image with a short description, trivia, and other important information briefly stated.
It is then produced for distribution and selling.
The first card to feature basketball players were the Sport King Series released in 1993.
Since then, these cards are usually associated with sports.
These cards are manufactured by the only three companies that were given permission by NBA to produce and sell trading NBA cards.
These are Fleer, Topps, and Upper Deck.
They have the freedom to produce different kinds of cards, with the amount varying depending on the brand, design, and availability.
The value of an NBA trading card depends on the player's popularity, the scarcity of the card, its condition, and the level of demand it gets from the collectors.
A very popular card with huge mass production might lessen in value while a limited supply of a popular trading card will most likely increase its value.
For the older set of collectibles, the value has risen considerably high and has now become collectors' items.
However, the value remains low for a less popular card given that there is less demand from the collectors.
A card's condition also affects its value.
A card in mint, near mint, fine, or excellent condition has a higher value compared to those classified as having good or fair condition.
A poorly conditioned card is classified as such if it is seriously damaged and thus has very little value, except if it is extremely rare.
Collectors buy these cards from a wide selection of stores that sell basketball trade cards, memorabilia stores, retail stores, convenience stores, and even online specifically NBA Card Company websites.
Starters need not fear of breaking any rule in its collection simply because there are no such rules.
There are choices though, all depending on the collector's interest.
Some fanatics collect cards in a given set, some focusing on their favorite team or player, while others simply collecting cards of Hall of Famers or rookies.
Having fun in one's collecting is the most important thing.
These cards are up for grabs.
Awaken the collector in you and start having fun as you collect your own NBA cards.
