Transform plain toilet paper tubes into earth-friendly Christmas crafts to dress up your home or classroom for the holidays. Simple enough for even young kids to handle and good for the planet at the same time, Christmas crafts using toilet paper rolls are a fun family project that can get everyone into the holiday spirit. They may be recycled art projects, but the Christmas crafts don't pale in comparison to commercial decorations, resulting in a colorful and festive display for the home or classroom. - According to PreschoolEdcuation.com, the shape of toilet paper tubes makes them ideal for creating Christmas candles. The kids paint the tubes in red or green and add stripes, dots or other patterns to the paint for a custom look. You can also cover the tube with construction paper. To add a sparkly touch, the site suggestions adding glitter on the exterior of the tube. After the kids tear pieces of orange and yellow tissue paper to create the flames, insert the tissue paper into the top of the tube with some of it sticking out. Use a small paper plate as a candle holder.
- Use toilet paper tubes as the body of stand-up Christmas characters. You can make elves, reindeer, Santa, angels or any other Christmas characters.
Let the kids paint the tubes to match the character. For example, they can paint it brown for a reindeer. They cut arms, legs and faces for the character out of construction paper before attaching them to the tube. Adding other accents such as pipe cleaner antlers on the reindeer or a cotton ball beard on Santa completes the look. - Toilet paper tubes work well for creating your own custom Christmas napkin rings to dress up the holiday table. The toilet paper tube is cut into thirds. The kids paint the outsides in red and green and add other holiday-themed accents. One simple option is to cut holly leaves out of green construction paper and glue them to the tube. You can then glue three red pompoms to resemble berries.
- This craft uses a toilet paper tube as the trunk of a Christmas tree. You can leave it plain or paint it with brown tempera paint. The kids twist a piece of green construction paper into a cone shape and tape it to hold the shape. They decorate the cone with glitter glue, pompoms, sequins and other craft materials. The cone goes on top of the brown toilet paper tube to complete the tree.
- Toilet tubes work well as the base for an advent calendar. According to DLKT-Holidays.com, you'll need 25 tubes, one for each day from December 1 to Christmas day. The craft website suggests using 13 tubes and cutting them in half for a smaller display. The tubes are covered with construction paper in Christmas colors. To make a cap, you glue a circle of construction paper to one end. You then add a piece of candy or small treat and cover the other end with a construction paper circle. Repeat the process with all 25 tubes. Numbers from one through 25 written on the ends of the tubes indicate the order to open the tubes. You secure the tubes to a piece of poster board with glue or tape. You can create a custom look by arranging them into any shape such as a square, Christmas tree or circle. Each day, the kids open the corresponding tube to reveal the treat.
