How to Winterize a Volvo 3.0 Engine Penta Boat
- 1). Remove the cotter pin from the propeller nut with pliers, and remove the nut from the propeller shaft with a wrench. Slide the propeller from the shaft. Check for any rope or fishing line that has fouled the shaft and grease the shaft with waterproof marine grease. Change the oil and fuel filters, replacing the filter elements and the gasket on the oil filter.
- 2). Connect a garden hose to the engine flushing connection turn the hose on all the way. Start the engine and move your throttle forward until your engine is running at 1,500 RPM.
- 3). Spray marine engine fogging oil into the carburetor until the RPMs drop and the exhaust is producing heavy, blue smoke. Shut off the engine.
- 4). Turn off the hose and disconnect the hose from the flushing connection. Remove the drain plugs from the after end of both exhaust manifolds, the main block drain at the bottom of the engine compartment. Insert a wire into each drain to ensure no trash impedes the flow from the drain.
- 5). Loosen the water line clamps on the water pump on the front of the engine with a screwdriver and remove the water lines from the pump. Loosen and remove the four water water lines for the water pump on top of the engine. Allow the water lines and the pumps to drain.
- 6). After the lines have drained, pour a 50/50 mix of corrosion-inhibiting antifreeze and water into the hoses for the top water pump; it takes 4 gallons to fill the engine. Reconnect the water lines and store the drain plugs until you fit your boat out for the next season.
- 7). Spray a moisture-excluding lubricant on all parts. Remove the battery. Use tape to mark the battery cables so they can be reconnected properly when you prepare for the next season. Apply marine grease to the battery termials.
