How to Install a New Processor in an IBM Thinkpad 600E
- 1). Turn off your laptop, disconnect the power cable and close the LCD screen. Place the laptop with the top side facing downwards. Rotate the laptop so the front edge of the laptop is facing towards you. Remove the battery pack from the bottom casing of the laptop and set it aside.
- 2). Locate the hard drive compartment in the upper left-hand corner of the laptop. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the hard drive's locking screw. Remove the hard drive's front, plastic cover from the top edge of the laptop near the left LCD hinge. Grasp the pull-tap extending from the hard drive compartment, and then pull the hard drive out of its compartment and set it aside.
- 3). Locate the DVD drive in the upper right-hand corner of the laptop's bottom casing. Use a small, flat-head screwdriver to remove the rubber screw cover from the laptop's bottom casing. Remove the single Phillips-head screw securing the DVD drive in place. Grasp the front of the DVD drive, and then slide it out of its compartment.
- 4). Use a small, flat-head screwdriver to remove the five rubber screw covers from the bottom casing. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the 10 remaining screws from the bottom casing. Place the laptop face up, and then open the LCD screen.
- 5). Remove the Phillips-head screw from behind the top row of keyboard keys on the left side of the laptop. Grasp the keyboard from the bottom edge, tilt it upwards, and then disconnect the keyboard's ribbon cable and the touchpad cable from the upper left-hand corner of the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop and set it aside. This will reveal the internal components of your laptop.
- 6). Remove the five Phillips-head screws securing the heat sink to the motherboard. The heat sink is a large piece of metal situated in the upper left corner of the motherboard. Lift the heat sink out of the motherboard and set it aside.
- 7). Disconnect the fan power cable from the motherboard, and then remove the two Phillips-head screws securing the fan to the processor. Lift the fan out of the motherboard and set it aside.
- 8). Press on the locking tabs on the right side of the processor, grasp the sides of the processor, and then lift it straight up and out of the laptop.
- 9). Repeat this procedure in reverse to install the replacement processor and re-assemble your ThinkPad laptop.
